MERCED — November 2, 2026. Merced city and county leaders have asked California’s High-Speed Rail Authority to address transportation and infrastructure consequences before making irreversible changes to the planned Merced station.
A proposed move remains under debate
The rail authority’s 2026 Business Plan identifies a possible station near Mission Avenue in southeast Merced, rather than the earlier downtown concept. Merced officials say station design, road connections, land acquisition, funding and impacts still require resolution.
What local leaders want
In an August 2026 letter, city and county officials requested a legally enforceable regional mitigation plan, with identified projects, costs, responsible agencies and schedules. They also emphasized the importance of including Merced in Segment 1, Phase 1 of high-speed rail.
No final station relocation is established here
An option in a business plan does not by itself resolve local permitting, funding, environmental review or agreements. The city maintains a public chronology of station discussions and documents for residents who wish to monitor decisions.
